There's no single right answer - it depends on what you're chasing: calm water, whale sharks, or a quiet reef with nobody else on it. Here's how we'd break it down, season by season, after years of reading this weather from the deck.
When is the best time to visit Belize overall?
The dry season, December through May, is the safest bet for sun, calm seas, and clear water - with the outer reef at its best from February to May. If you want the two strongest weeks of the whole year, look at November and May: warm, mostly dry, and quieter than the December-to-April rush.
Everything after that comes down to what you actually want from the trip. Chasing whale sharks pulls you toward a narrow window in spring. Chasing lower prices and empty anchorages points toward the wet season instead. What's the weather like in Belize month by month?
Belize stays warm and humid all year, averaging around 84F (29C), with a dry season from December to May and a wetter "green season" from June to November. Air temperatures swing gently between the high 70s and high 80s Fahrenheit (mid-20s to low 30s Celsius) depending on the month, and humidity sits high year-round.
Locals have nicknames for the small variations. August is the "Little Dry," a short break in the rains with lighter showers. April brings the "Iguana Rains," brief cooling showers that pass in minutes and rarely disrupt a day on the water. Don't chase a single "hottest month" - late summer runs warm across the board, and the gap between any two months is a couple of degrees, not a reason to shift your dates.
On the water, a breeze usually takes the edge off even the warmest afternoons - it's the humidity on land that catches most first-time visitors off guard. The sea tells a steadier story than the air: it holds between 77F and 86F (25C to 30C) every month of the year, so a wetsuit never makes the packing list. If you're coming from a four-season climate, pack for one temperature range and be done with it.
When is the water clearest for snorkeling and sailing?
Visibility peaks during the dry season, February through May, when the outer reef can open up to roughly 100 feet (30 meters) and the sea lies flat. April and May are the sweet spot - minimal wind, glassy mornings, and some of the calmest sailing conditions of the year.
Mornings are worth building your day around no matter the month. Wind tends to build through the afternoon, so the first few hours on the water are usually the clearest and calmest, before the trade winds pick up. During the wetter months, visibility drops but doesn't disappear - expect somewhere in the 40 to 80 foot range on the outer reef, still good enough for a proper snorkel, just softer around the edges. Atolls further offshore, like Turneffe and Glover's, tend to hold clear water a little longer into the wetter months too, since they sit further from any runoff.

When can you see whale sharks near Belize?
Whale sharks show up near Gladden Spit, off Placencia, in a window that runs roughly March through June, clustering around the full moon - a couple of days before it through about ten days after. April and May tend to be the strongest months, but the exact dates shift every year because they follow the moon, not the calendar.
The sharks aren't there for the view. They're feeding on the eggs released when cubera and black snapper spawn in huge numbers around the full moon - one of the few places on earth where that timing is this predictable. That predictability still isn't a guarantee. Even dive operators who work this spot year after year will tell you honestly that some trips come up empty, and they'll usually recommend booking a few days in a row rather than betting everything on one date.
Because the window shifts with the moon rather than the month, we'd rather send you a firm date range once we know which lunar cycle you're traveling around than promise something vague a year out. What is Belize's "green season" - and why do some travelers prefer it?
Green season runs June through November - it's the rainy season under a kinder name, and for the right traveler, it's genuinely a good trade. Rivers run fuller, the jungle turns a deeper green, and crowds thin out along with prices, which typically drop 30 to 50 percent from peak-season rates.
Rain rarely takes over the whole day. Most days follow the same rhythm: sunny mornings, then a short, heavy shower in the afternoon or evening that clears out fast. It's also when Nassau grouper gather by the thousands off the reef to spawn, from October into December - one more thing happening beneath the surface that has nothing to do with peak season.
For photographers and anyone who likes a quieter reef, this stretch has its own appeal - fewer boats at anchor, softer light most mornings, and a version of Belize that feels less like a postcard and more like a place people actually live. When is hurricane season in Belize - and should it stop you from booking?
Hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with the highest risk window from mid-August through October. Direct hits on Belize are relatively rare - plenty of seasons pass with no storm making landfall at all - but the risk isn't zero, especially in that late-summer stretch.
We wouldn't tell you to avoid these months outright. June and July, for instance, carry much lower risk despite technically falling inside the season. What we would say: travel insurance and a flexible flight are worth the small extra cost if you're booking August through October, and it's smart to keep an eye on the forecast as your dates get closer. Belize's National Meteorological Service and NOAA both track the Atlantic season closely, and so do we - it's a normal part of how we plan a charter in that stretch of the calendar, not an afterthought. Does Belize get sargassum (seaweed) - and when?
Yes, but it's a Caribbean-wide problem, not a Belize one - and while it has historically built up from spring into fall, 2025 saw sargassum showing up nearly year-round, so "summer only" isn't a safe assumption anymore.
When it does arrive, it piles up mainly on beaches and the shoreline. The Belize Tourism Board runs a weekly forecast and coordinates cleanup crews in the hardest-hit spots, including San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, and Placencia. Sailing out to the outer reef puts you somewhere different from a beach chair on a sargassum morning - open water and reef anchorages are a different environment than the sand, even on days when the shoreline is dealing with a heavy bloom.
It's not a reason to avoid any particular month, just something worth knowing rather than being surprised by. If sargassum on the beach would be a dealbreaker for part of your trip, it's worth checking the BTB's current forecast before you land - conditions can change week to week, even within the same month.
When are the biggest crowds - and when are the best deals?
Peak season runs December through April, with the biggest crowds and highest prices around Christmas and Easter. The quietest, cheapest stretch runs from May through mid-November, when accommodation and tours often run 30 to 50 percent below peak rates.
September and October are the calendar's quietest months by far - some smaller businesses even close for a stretch - though that's also the peak of storm season, so it's a trade-off rather than a free win. July brings a small crowd bump of its own, when lobster season opens and towns along the coast celebrate with Lobster Fest weekends - worth knowing if you're chasing quiet, less so if you want to join the party.
If you want the best of both worlds, look at November or May. Both sit just outside the peak crowd and peak price, with weather that's still solidly on your side.
When is the best time for a private sailing charter?
For the calmest seas and clearest water, the dry season gives a private charter its best conditions - but shoulder season (November and May) is where the value is strongest, and honestly, we can make almost any month work with the right plan.
