We're Szymon and Kamila, and we sail our AMEL 54 out of Placencia and Hopkins, on Belize's southern coast. From Placencia, our four favorite cayes are Lark (about 1 hour away), Moho (about 2 hours), Ranguana (about 3 hours), and Tom Owens (about 4 hours). From Hopkins, further up the coast, we sail out to Bread and Butter, South Water, Carrie Bow, and Tobacco cayes, all about 1.5 to 2.5 hours out. The times in this guide are all one way and rounded, and none of them is a promise. The wind decides. A breeze from the right direction takes time off the trip, a headwind adds it back, and that's why you pick the caye while we read the wind the morning we leave.
Hopkins or Placencia: Which Is Better for a Day of Sailing and Snorkeling?
Placencia is the closer port for Lark, Moho, Ranguana, and Tom Owens; Hopkins is the shorter sail to Bread and Butter, South Water, Carrie Bow, and Tobacco. Which is better depends on the cayes you want to see.
Hopkins sits further up the coast, so the two ports suit different cayes. From Hopkins, Ranguana and Tom Owens are more than 5 hours away each way, which leaves no day at all, so those two always start in Placencia.
The useful question is where you're staying and what you want from the water. Tell us both when you get in touch, and we'll suggest the port that makes the day work, even when the honest answer is a closer caye than the one you had in mind.
Where Is the Best Snorkeling Near Placencia?
For marine life, Ranguana Caye is our best shot at turtles, rays, and reef sharks. If you'd rather spend less of the day sailing, Lark Caye's mangrove roots are about an hour from Placencia, with small reef fish hiding in the shade.
Here's how our four Placencia cayes compare before we go through them one by one:

The pattern is simple enough: the farther out we sail, the more the day belongs to the water, and the more the forecast has a say in whether we go.
What Is Lark Caye Like?
Lark Caye is covered in mangroves, and most of what's worth seeing sits below the waterline, where small reef fish hide among the roots. At about 1 hour from Placencia, it's the closest of our four.
We call it a forest under the water, and that's close to literal. Above the surface, Lark is mangrove from edge to edge. Below it, the roots throw shade over the shallows, and that shade is where the fish gather.
Being close is Lark's other advantage. It's the one caye of our four that realistically fits a half-day trip, and because it lies roughly on the way out toward Moho, it's worth asking us whether your day can fit both.
Is Moho Caye Worth a Day Trip from Placencia?
Moho Caye is worth the trip if you want a beach day with snorkeling: white sand, water you can swim in right off the beach, and coconut palms. At about 2 hours from Placencia each way, plan on a full day rather than a half.
Moho is the caye we'd pick when you want sand under your feet between swims. We snorkel here too, as we do wherever we stop, and coconuts come straight off the palm.
If seeing turtles or rays is the whole point of your trip, though, Moho isn't our first suggestion for that. Ranguana is, and we'd rather tell you that now than have you find out from the beach.
What Can You Swim With at Ranguana Caye?
Ranguana is our best shot at swimming with turtles, rays, and reef sharks. It's a tiny caye right out on the reef, about 3 hours from Placencia each way, so it's a full day out.
There's nothing but open blue around Ranguana, and it's the caye we point people to when the water is the reason they came to Belize. We say "best shot" and mean exactly that. The sea decides who turns up, and some days are quieter than others.
It's also a long sail, and we plan it around the forecast rather than squeezing it in. From Hopkins, Ranguana is too far for a day trip, so this one always starts in Placencia.
How Far Is Tom Owens Caye, and When Can You Go?
Tom Owens Caye is the farthest of the four cayes we sail to from Placencia, about 4 hours each way, so the sail itself fills most of a full day. We only go on our longest days out, and only when the wind plays along.
Two things make the distance worth it. On the caye, you can walk up to the Conch Shell House. In the water, spotted eagle rays glide just under the surface.
It's also the trip where honesty matters most. If the forecast for your day doesn't give us a fair shot at getting out there and back comfortably, we'll say so, and we'll suggest Ranguana or Moho instead. A long day spent pushing into the wind isn't the trip you came for.
South Water, Carrie Bow, Tobacco or Bread and Butter: What Can You Snorkel from Hopkins?
From Hopkins, we sail out to snorkel at Bread and Butter Caye (about 1.5 hours), South Water and Carrie Bow cayes (about 2 hours), and Tobacco Caye (about 2.5 hours).
These cayes sit further north on the reef than our Placencia four. South Water and Carrie Bow lie almost side by side, with Tobacco a little further north. South Water Caye is inside its own marine reserve, and tiny Carrie Bow Caye has hosted a Smithsonian research station since 1972.

How Do We Plan a Day Around the Wind at the Cayes?
A day to the cayes with us is private and planned around the wind: your group only, up to 8 guests, for half a day or a full one, anchored off the caye you picked in a spot out of that day's wind.
You snorkel or take the paddle board out, and we cook lunch on deck. Picking that anchorage matters more on the longer trips than most people expect. On a caye an hour or more offshore, a sheltered spot is the difference between a calm lunch and a bumpy one.
That flexibility is most of the argument for a private boat. A group tour runs a fixed route on a fixed schedule, and plenty of operators do that well and for less money. On a private charter, the day bends around your group instead: an extra half hour in the water at Lark, a later lunch, a switch from Tom Owens to Ranguana when the wind turns. You don't need to be a strong swimmer for any of this. Life jackets are standard aboard, and a good part of the day is simply sailing, swimming, and floating.
Can You Sail to Ranguana and Tom Owens Year-Round?
We sail to the cayes year-round, but the long sails out to Ranguana and Tom Owens work best in the calmer months of the dry season, from late November through May.
